She started in “Ang TV” and became a contravida in “Pangako Sa Iyo” when she was only 11 as Ina Raymundo’s daughter. Denise Laurel's birthday blues APRYLLE LIABRES (Contributor) 7 October 2006  Denise Laurel, one of the freshest faces on the ABS-CBN Star Magic block, celebrated her birthday earlier this month. However, unlike most people, Denise didn't just receive presents. She also received something that threatened to cast a dark shadow on the rest of her day—a phone call from someone on staff at the showbiz talk show The Buzz, asking to interview her regarding the rumours linking her to fellow Star Magic talent Sam Milby. When Denise received the phone call, she was getting dressed to go out and celebrate her birthday with her friends and family. She says she was shocked when she found out that she was being linked to the former Pinoy Big Brother housemate. When asked why, she says she was shocked because she never expected it to happen to her. “I'm a good girl—I like to keep a low profile because I want to avoid becoming fodder for the rumour mill,” she explains. She may have wanted to avoid it, but gracing the gossip pages is something all celebrities must face—and with Denise, it was no different. It all started after she and Sam appeared in a toothpaste commercial with each other, after which they were paired with each other in an installment of Star Magic Presents titled Tender, Loving Care. Denise Laurel, back at the Kapamilya network For Denise Laurel, ABS-CBN will always be home and so despite a short separation, she has proven that indeed home is where the heart is. The Star Magic talent has returned to where she grew up as an actress, and she’s here to stay. Denise made a name in Singapore when she was fortunate to be part of MTV Asia’s "Rouge" which was shown all over Asia. Among the many who auditioned, she stood out and got the role of a smart lead vocalist named Pat. At the age of 16, her experience in working with other nationalities has taught her things that helped her improve her craft. After a season in "Rouge," Denise decided to concentrate on her local showbiz career. She worked for the rival network and appeared in various commercials such as Sunsilk, Bullfighter, Yeheey.com, and Pizza Hut. The recent Close-Up TV ad that she starred in with Sam Milby got her a lot of attention. Her team-up with one of the ASAP Coverboys was seen in "ASAP Full Circle" and "Star Magic Presents." Denise was discovered by Star Magic’s big boss Mr. M (Johnny Manahan) in a play of Repertory Philippines. Denise: To showbiz born By Jerry Donato The Philippine Star 11/23/2006  Her last name says it all. Denise Laurel’s entry to showbusiness is inevitable, decreed by destiny. The granddaughter of art and theater patron Celia Laurel and niece of former movie actor and Miss Saigon alumnus Cocoy Laurel is no neophyte in the biz. The then 10-year-old had her first taste of TV acting via ABS-CBN Pangako Sa ‘Yo playing a mean, snob daughter of genteel lineage. Denise considers her Pangako Sa ‘Yo stint an experience, especially for someone who used to do theater at a very young age. She has done stage performances for Repertory Philippines. The young Laurel has appreciated the great expanse of theater and the intimacy of TV. After a few projects like Ang TV, she channel switched to play a goody-goody role on GMA 7’s teen show Click. Her blossoming career then was rudely interrupted by the MTV series Rouge. In the show, she had the chance to work with Asian stars and the job demanded her to be based in Singapore for a while. After, Denise returned to Manila and to her real home – the Kapamilya network. Denise is one of the 19 Star Magic stars (along with Shaina Magdayao, Rayver Cruz, Victor Basa and Carla Humphries) who will headline the teen TV series Star Magic Presents: Abt Ur Lav. The show, which premieres on Nov. 25, 5 p.m., follows in the footsteps of Gimik and Tabing-ilog that launched the careers of Judy Ann Santos, Dominic Ochoa, Jolina Magdangal, Marvin Agustin, Diether Ocampo, Piolo Pascual, G Tongi, John Lloyd Cruz, Kaye Abad, Paolo Contis and Desiree del Valle. "Celine is like the woman of the world," Denise describes her character. "She lives in the Philippines alone. She is kind, a fashionista and works as a gym instructor. She also teaches martial arts." Denise’s Celine is very close to her heart. Off-cam, Denise dabbles in mix martial arts and soccer. She also lived abroad on her own. What interests Denise about her role as Celine is her being a "Crush ng Bayan." The younger male cast members follow Celine wherever she goes and attend all her martial arts and gym classes to have a closer look at her and get intimate with her. Although being cast in a big show (working with 18 other young stars) is been-there-done-that thing for Denise, she still enjoys the idea of fun and even the riot behind it. 22 December 2006  SHE'S GETTING a lot of good breaks on television lately, including a featured role as John Lloyd Cruz's tomboyish friend on Maging Sino Ka Man, but Denise Laurel says that theater will always be her first love. Denise, of course, is the niece of veteran theater actor Victor “Cocoy” Laurel and granddaughter of Celia Diaz-Laurel of Repertory Philippines fame. Denise grew up surrounded by all these famous theater performers, and Sunday dinners at the Laurel house in Mandaluyong would often be preceded by family members gathered around the piano, singing those familiar Broadway favourites. This was the kind of atmosphere that Denise grew up in, so it was inevitable that she carve out a career in theater as well. Denise was about five years old when she landed her first stage role in the musical South Pacific. She was in the theater to watch her Tito [Uncle] Cocoy rehearse. At first, she had no idea what he was doing onstage. But the longer she sat there and watched, the more she realized that it seemed like a lot of fun. “One day, I just said, 'I want to do something like that.' The the people from Repertory Philippines asked me, 'You want?' I said I had to tell my parents first, but I already knew that I was going to do it,” recalls Denise, who also has a featured role in ABS-CBN's youth-oriented series Abt Ur Luv. Eventually, Denise graduated to bigger roles, then went on to become an assistant teacher to other aspiring theatre artists. Now that she's in mainstream showbiz, Denise misses theater, but accepts it as part of the game. “You win some, you lose some,” she says. Of course, she's had to make some adjustments going into showbiz. For one thing, she's had to work hard on her image. There are some people who think that just because she's a Laurel and granddaughter of a former Vice-President (the late Salvador Laurel), that everything comes easy to her. “I hear people say things like, 'She's a Laurel. She must be rich' or 'She's a Laurel; she must be a snob'. Hindi simpleng lips to lips ang eksena, ha. Ginagantihan ni Denise ang mga halik ni Lloydi. From now on, she will always be remembered as the "other girl" who has tasted Lloydi lips. Hindi na solo ni Bea ang pagkakataong sagutin ang tanong kung paano ba humalik ang binatang pinagnanasahan ng marami. Nakasama rin si Denise ni Sam Milby sa isang toothpaste commercial. That’s why we have remained good friends. “As of now, I want to concentrate on my showbiz career. One day soon, I want to resume my studies as well,” sagot ni Denise. DREAM FACTORY Mario Bautista * * * Diehard fans of the Bea Alonzo-John Lloyd Cruz tandem were shocked when they saw John Lloyd doing a torrid kissing scene with newcomer Denise Laurel in "Maging Sino Ka Man." "I don’t mean to be contravida to their fans but they should thank me kasi, it’s because of me that Bea realized in the story na in love siya with John Lloyd," says Denise. "Nagselos siya when she saw us kissing." A scion of the Laurel clan, what did her parents say when they saw the kissing scene? "My mom was watching with my dad and she was shocked, telling my dad, ‘Look, look, your daughter!’ Ang dad ko naman, quiet lang daw. I think he accepts that it’s part of my job as an actress. This isn’t my first kissing scene naman. I also kissed Sam Milby in an episode of ‘Star Magic Presents’ that rated very well so it was even replayed." Denise got good training in theater. Now, she is a mainstay in "Abt Ur Luv" every Saturday at 5 p.m. In the last episode, "Bukingan Wednesday," there were some revelations that affected her character as Celine and that of PBB’s Joaqui Mendoza, who plays Vince. In the story, Denise is the girlfriend of Rayver Cruz but she feels he’s neglecting her since he is attracted to Shaina Magdayao. Joaqui is the best friend of Rayver, but he’s got a big crush on Shaina. In this Saturday’s episode, "Thursday’s Choice," Joaqui and Rayver have a falling out and Shaina feels she’s the reason for this. Denise is also affected when she sees Rayver and Shaina together, even if Shaina tries to be closer to Joaqui so as not to hurt more people. More realizations and confrontations happen and the four young stars prove they are sensitive actors who can portray a variety of emotions on screen. "I love my role as Celine," says Denise. "She’s a gym instructor that other boys in the show like Chris Gutierrez, Aaron Agassi and Angelo Patrimonio desire, pero si Rayver lang ang gusto ko." So after the fans of Bea and John Lloyd got annoyed at her, now it’s the turn of Shaina-Rayver fans to feel that she’s the obstacle in the love affair of their idols.
