Another Laurel shines

Another Laurel is making her presence felt in the local entertainment scene. Her name is Denise, and she’s the granddaughter of the late former Vice President Salvador "Doy" Laurel and Celia Diaz Laurel. We told Denise, 19, that with her tantalizing eyes, she looks almost exactly like her grandmother Celia, to which she said "she’d like that very much." Denise, by the way, stays with her in the Laurel ancestral house along Shaw Blvd. in Pasig.

Denise is one of the most promising talents of ABS–CBN Star Magic. She’s currently cast in Star Magic Presents "Abt Ur Luv" aired every Saturday at 5 p.m. Today’s episode "Thursday’s Choice," has her and Joaqui Mendoza playing Celine and Vince. As Celine, Denise is an independent girl who lives on her own. She is self-supporting , working in a gym as a martial arts instructor. She is the "vavavoom" girl that gets the hormones of the boys raging. Celine is also the best friend of Brenda (played by Carla Humphries) and girlfriend of Gens (Rayver Cruz).

On the other hand, Vince is Gens’ bestfriend. He is the computer technie in the internet cafe of Gens and he comes from a not so welloff family but is a nice and dependable guy. He likes Neri (Shaina Magdayao) and this tests his friendship with Gens.

Star Magic Presents "Abt Ur Luv" is a 30-minute show (it reportedly got high ratings for its Christmas and New Year’s episodes) featuring the young talents of ABS-CBN including Aaron Agassi, Cris Gutierrez, AJ Perez, Aldred Gachalian, Empress Shuck, Valeen Montenegro, Zia Marquez and Angelo Patrimonio.

Going back to the very talented Denise, she started singing at age three, and in fact at that age she was already part of the political campaign that the Laurel family embarked on when Doy ran for vice president of the country.

At seven, Denise made her first musical play with the Repertory Philippines. She has only fond memories of Repertory’s late artistic director and prime mover Zeneida "Bibot" Amador who was her mentor.

She used to be a talent of GMA 7 and in fact it was when she was doing "Click" that she and AJ Eigenmann got into a romantic relationship that lasted more than three years. They have split, Denise but they remain friends. "I love his family kasi so I still see them especially on special occasions. We decided to split when we found out we’re getting so serious eh we’re still too young. So we talked about it, career muna."

Denise never had a yaya!

It’s very surprising to know that Denise never had a yaya in her entire life, although she comes from a welloff family. Her mom taught her to be indenpendent, she said. She cleans, she washes her own clothes, she cooks (although she likes baking more than cooking, she said), and like her Lola Celia she even goes to Divisoria alone (she commutes using public transpo, would you believe?).

Ever since her "Ang TV" days Denise hasn’t ask her parents for any allowance, she added. Because of her flourishing showbiz career, she has put on hold her education but she said she’s going back to school soon, "otherwise, my father would kill me!"

Does she has anyone (like an idol) she’d like to emulate? Denise said no, "I’d like people to someday say wala akong katulad!"

STAY lang sa Pilipinas muna si Denise Laurel with no plans of going into politics or going into another relationship.

Always happy kami to see Denise kahit na bumalik na siya sa kanyang original home station, sa ABS.

Napagkuwentuhan ulit namin ang aming Singapore trip two years ago and though may offer ulit ang MTV Singapore sa kanya to try doing TV jock, stay raw muna siya sa Pilipinas for her career here. Ang alam nga namin, short-listed din siya for the Kim role sa revival ng Miss Saigon, eh, pero wala pa raw linaw ito.

At kahit Laurel ang kanyang apelyido, wala siyang balak pumasok sa politics. Sa mga pinsan na lang daw niya ‘yun. Single pa rin si Denise after her break-up with AJ Eigenmann, and no plans of looking for another love. After all, gumaganda ulit ang career niya with new manager Eric Raymundo. Nag-guest siya lately sa Maging Sino Ka Man and may regular Saturday show siya sa ABS, ang Star Magic Presents: Abt Ur Luv where she plays Celine.

Ginulat ni Denise Laurel ang mga magulang nang mapanood ang kissing scene nila ni John Lloyd Cruz sa Maging Sino Ka Man. Nag-ingay daw ang mom niya at tahimik naman ang dad niya habang nanonood.

Tampok din si Denise sa Valentine’s Day presentation ng Maalaala Mo Kaya with Geoff Eigenmann. Regular din siyang napapanood sa Abt Ur Luv sa role ni Celine, ang martial arts instructor na crush ng bayan.

Natawa kami sa kaswal na tsika ni Denise na may sariling chair sa bahay ng mga Laurel si Pia Pilapil, anak ni Pilar Pilapil sa lolo niyang si former Vice President Doy Laurel.

“She used to come to the house at naglalaro kami. She has her own chair, right beside Papa Doy. He loves her so much,” wika nito.

Incidentally, sa episode this Saturday ng Abt Ur Luv, Thursday’s Choice, apektado sina Celine (Denise) at Vince (Joaqui Mendoza) tuwing nakikitang magkasama sina Neri (Shaina Magdayao) at Gens (Rayver Cruz). Ang istorya nilang apat ang isa sa nagpapaganda sa show.

LOLA’S GIRL – Fifty or so years ago, the esteemed Celia Diaz Laurel (widow of Vice President Doy Laurel and actress-painter) must have looked like her 19-year-old granddaughter, Denise Laurel. They have very similar facial features – full lips, sparkling and smiling eyes, well defined cheekbones. And beautiful speaking and singing voices.

Her parents are David Laurel and the former Ruby Sanz. She grew up in the Laurel compound in Mandaluyong City, always near her Mama Celia, who’s delighted whenever she’s told that Denise is a "young Celia."

Despite her illustrious name (great grandfather Jose P. Laurel is former President), Denise remains simple. She grew up without a yaya and early on learned how to cook, wash dishes and clothes, clean the house, even take the taxi or MRT. These traits served her in good stead when she acted on Singapore television for over a year along with Mariel Rodriguez.

Truth to tell, the Laurels live simply. "Would you believe Mama Celia goes to Divisoria alone?" says Denise.

Denise and Joaqui’s choice

Today’s episode of Star Magic Presents Abt Ur Luv entitled Thursday’s Choice focuses on Vince and Celine, the characters played respectively by Denise Laurel and Joaqui Mendoza. Denise was Mariel Rodriguez’s co-star in the MTV Asia’s Rouge production, while Joaqui is the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition housemate who is now a communication arts freshman at the Ateneo University. Buzzstation met them for an intimate interview and both succeeded in charming those present with their quick wit, straightforwardness and happy dispositions.

Celine is the self-supporting girl who lives by herself. Working in a gym as a martial arts instructor, the best friend of Brenda (Carla Humphries) and Gens (Rayver Cruz) gives the boys huge spurts of adrenaline. Vince, on the other hand, is a nice and dependable guy who comes from a not-so-well-off family so he has to work as a computer techie at the internet café to support himself. He likes Neri (Shaina Magdayao) and this tests his friendship with Gens.

Everyone is wondering why Vince and Gens are not communicating. Some think that Neri is the reason. Gens and Neri are likewise avoiding each other. This forces Neri to ask if she is the cause of the cold attitude. Vince and Celine are affected when they see the two together. Neri decides to be closer to Vince, perhaps to influence her to love him more. Gens decides not to pursue Neri, but to stay with Celine so as not to hurt more people. More realizations and confrontations make the story you will not want to miss!

MUKHANG may bago na tayong Heart Evangelista sa katauhan ni Denise Laurel. Kung ano’ng mayroon kay Heart na minahal ng showbiz, mayroon din si Denise. Galing siya sa buena pamilya, may breeding, may pinag-aralan. Idagdag pang chinky eyed siya, charming, Inglesera, at marunong umarte.

Nakikita na rin si Denise sa commercial, tulad ng toothpaste ad nila ni Sam Milby. Hindi rin kataka-takang madagdag siya sa regular hosts ng "ASAP" isa sa mga araw na ito.

If my memory serves me right, nakagawa na ng isang teleserye sa Singapore si Denise (with Mariel Rodriguez). Naipakita niya roon hindi lamang ang talento niya sa pag-arte, kungdi pati sa pagkanta at pagsayaw.

Denise was so good in "Maalaala Mo Kaya" nung Biyernes kaya inulan tayo ng text messages at e-mail requesting Tiyempo for more write-ups tungkol sa pamangkin na ito ni Cocoy Laurel.

Swak na swak ang team-up ni Denise kay Jeff Eigenmann na dating katambal ni Heart. Ang lakas ng chemistry nila sa "MMK." Tinitiyak ng Ti yempo na masusundan pa ang team-up nila. It’s interesting to note na ex-boyfriend ni Denise ang younger brother ni Jeff na si AJ Eigenmann.

DENISE LEAVES TV SHOW

AFTER Shaina Magdayao and Rayver Cruz, another mainstay of “Abt Ur Luv” is leaving the youth show.

This is Denise Laurel. Her character, Celine, gets a job in Singapore so she’s moving there. This Saturday’s episode, which ends the second season, is a despedida for her and her friends want to make it memorable for her.

Meantime, Brenda (Carla Humphries), continues to spy on her sister Hillary (Empress Schuck) who sneaks out to date Bill (Dino Imperial.) She questions Hillary’s friend (Zia Marquez) about the real score between Hillary and Bill, but Zia lies about it. Lieu (Aldred Gatchalian) feels bad that he neglected his GF, Gwen (Valeen Montenegro), since he’s been spying on his sister, Nelle (Lauren Young) and her date Josh (AJ Perez.) Nelle tries to mediate between him and Gwen so they can patch things up. Don’t miss the latest happenings in “Abt Ur Luv” this Saturday at 4 p.m. on ABS-CBN and watch out for the introduction of new teen stars in its third season.

Palalabasing pupunta sa Singapore para magtrabaho at bilang pamamaalam, iipunin niya ang barkada sa isang tapsilugan.

Bago umalis si Celine (Denise), nag-iwan siya ng scrapbook sa locker ni Stick (Victor Basa) hoping na mapapatawad siya ng mga kaibigan sa bigla niyang pag-alis.

AS AN actress, Denise Laurel can be said to have the best of both worlds - literally. That's because her shows, Pedro Penduko at Ang Mga Engkantao and the primetime drama Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos, are rooted in two different worlds: one virtual and the other, real.

In Pedro Penduko at Ang Mga Engkantao (which recently launched its second season), Denise's character Dianne, is part of a team of six young people called the Engkantao, each gifted with different powers, who must do battle with the evil Kalagua, who is bent on destroying the world. Denise explains that the term ‘engkantao' is culled from the words ‘engkanto', meaning a magical creature, and ‘tao', the Tagalog word for human. "So the engkantao are actually human beings who have magical powers, and their goal is to use these powers to save mankind," she says.

This is actually Denise's second season on the show. She returned, along with mainstays Matt Evans as Pedro, Oyo Boy Sotto as Josef, Aaron Villaflor as Edward, Makisig Morales as Moy, and Maja Salvador as Marie. Angelika dela Cruz also returns in the role of Dr. Eva Tabinas, who works as a university guidance counsellor but who, unknown to the six young people, is controlled by the evil Kalagua.

The Engkantao must combine their powers and set aside their rivalries with each other so they can defeat Kalagua. However, one of them must give up his life to save one of his peers. Who will it be? That is the question that will be answered in the show's second season, which has already started airing on ABS-CBN.

Denise says that playing a character on a show like Pedro Penduko - which is fast becoming a favourite among young Pinoy viewers - is great, because the storyline emphasises positive values like friendship and respect for elders. Denise, who comes from a big family, grew up with these values and knows how important they are.

In Pedro Penduko, she also gets to do things she wouldn't do if she played so-called "normal" characters, including wearing long, pointy extensions on her fingernails, which make her look like a character from the popular comic book series, The X-Men.

By contrast, the appearance and personality of her character in the primetime drama Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos is as normal as normal can be. On the show, Denise plays Trish, a rich but friendly young woman liked by everyone, and who falls in love with Mark, played by Joross Gamboa. Here, Denise doesn't wear any costumes and doesn't have any special or magical powers.

On the day of the press conference for the second season of Pedro Penduko at ang mga Engkantao held at ABS-CBN's Restaurant 9501, Denise was asked what it was like shuttling back and forth between the two shows. But at the time, it was only Denise's second day taping for Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos "so I can't really compare," she said. "But I have no complaints, because [both of them] take care of me very well."

Denise enjoys working on both shows precisely because they're so different from each other. In one, there are a lot of action scenes; in the other, there are dramatic scenes and light, comic moments.

AFTER Toni Gonzaga, kay Denise Laurel na-link si Sam Milby.

Si Denise ang sinisisi ng fans nina Toni at Sam na kesyo hindi natuloy sa relasyon ang sweetness ng dalawa dahil umeksena siya.

Nagsimula ang tsismis sa kanila ni Sam nang gawin ang TV commercial ng CloseUp. Siya ang na-blind-item na nililigawan ng binata na gallng sa mayamang pamilya.

Pero, nilinaw ni Denise na brother-sister relationship lang ang mayroon sila ni Sam, and that they are frequently seen together because pareho sila ng manager (si Erik Raymundo). Wala raw dapat ikagalit sa kanya ang Toni-Sam fans.

Anyway, malapit nang mapanood nang madalas sa ABS-CBN si Denise since kasama siya sa cast ng youth-oriented show na magpa-pilot sa Nov. 25. Ka-loveteam niya ang newbie at swimmer na si Enchong Dee. Bagay ang dalawa at siguradong maraming fans ang susuporta sa loveteam nila.

ABS-CBN Star Magic launches its 2008 Catalogue

ABS-CBN Star Magic can now use the old MGM tagline "more stars than in heaven."



For the past years, may taunang catalogue ang Star Magic ng ABS-CBN for its current list of stars. This year, in commemoration of the department's fifteenth year, isang engrandeng launching ang isinagawa ng Star Magic kahapon, September 23, sa pangunguna nina Mr. Johnny "Mr. M" Manahan and Ms. Rikka Dylim for the 2008 issue with a two-pronged pictorial exhibits, isa sa 14th Floor ng ABS-CBN EJL Building at isa sa TriNoMa Mall sa Quezon City.



Nagsidatingan ang napakaraming artista ng Star Magic—all in white—to grace the event. Every guest was given their copy of the 2008 catalogue.



Some of the pictures of the stars in the catalogue were blown up as exhibit. In center stage is the biggest of them all and the cover of the catalogue itself featuring the twelve leading stars of Star Magic: John Lloyd Cruz, Claudine Barretto, and Piolo Pascual in the first row; Shaina Magdayao, Sam Milby, and Bea Alonzo in the second row; Kristine Hermosa, Diether Ocampo, and Roxanne Guinoo in the third row; and Rafael Rosell, Angelica Panganiban; and Zanjoe Marudo in the last row.



Segregated into different divisions ang nilalaman ng 2008 catalogue.



The first is "Leading Ladies" kung saan may two-page spread each sina Claudine, Kristine, Bea, Angelica, Rica Peralejo, and Roxanne in that order.



Instead of leading men, mga "Torch Bearers" naman ang tawag sa grupo nina Piolo, John Lloyd, Sam, Diet, Zanjoe, Rafael, Dominic Ochoa, Carlos Agassi, and Jiro Manio. Nagawa na ang catalogue bago pa man hindi mag-renew si Jiro sa Star Magic last July kung kaya't kasali pa rin siya rito.



The "New Romantics" naman ang tawag sa mga love teams kung saan magkakasama sa isang pictures sina Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu, Matt Evans and Melissa Ricks, and Empress Schuck and Enchong Dee.



The "Ingénues" ang division ng mga up-and-coming leading ladies na sina Maja Salvador, Shaina Magdayao, Erich Gonzales, at Nikki Gil na may solo pictures, samantalang in pairs naman sina Lauren and Megan Young, Valeen Montenegro and Eda Nolan, Denise Laurel and Carla Humphries, and Kaye Abad and Jodi Sta Maria.
